2016 is finally over and 2017 is here! Diamond Comics has released their Top 300 Graphic Novel Sales for December 2016 and so I am pleased to release the Rising Sun Comics December 2016 Top 25 Graphic Novels list which as usual, is quite a bit different than Diamond’s Top 25 that reflects the overwhelming percentage of comic stores that are almost entirely dependent on super-hero books from the Big 2. And I could not be more proud!

I just want to give a shout out to all of our wonderful customers and especially the ladies who shop at our store and support the independent comics and graphic novels from the smaller publishers which in turn helps to insulate Rising Sun Comics from the unfolding catastrophic collapse of the Marvel Super-Hero Universe. 2017 is looking like a very dark year for comic shops that are dependent on comics from Marvel and DC. Thanks to your continued support of non super-hero titles I believe we will weather the coming storm and emerge stronger and healthier once it has subsided.

And now for some general sales trend information. The sales trends from the past two years continue. Year over year graphic novels sales are up double digits for the 24th consecutive month. Single comics (floppies) continue their downward spiral for the 12th consecutive month with year over year sales down double digits which I believe is due entirely to Marvel’s weak and convoluted publishing strategy. Manga sales are up double digits year over year for the 19th consecutive month. Is there any doubt that floppies are a failed business model for an industry that really needs to evolve quicker. It is very disturbing to me that this is not being discussed in earnest among comic industry professionals.

Steven Universe absolutely dominated graphic novel sales in December with five titles in the Top 25 (It would have been six titles if Steven Universe Volume 1 would have been available from Boom!) Marvel and DC each had one book in the Top 25 (Though the Deadpool book would have surely been knocked out of the Top 25 by Steven Universe Volume 1!)

Image Comics had six titles in the Top 25 followed by Boom and Viz with five titles each. Slave Labor Graphics showed up with Johnny The Homicidal Maniac which is really cool and rather unexpected. Junji Ito’s Fragments Of Horror from Viz was also a welcome addition to the Top 25 this month as well. All in all it was another successful Christmas retail season with a slight increase in print sales (comics, graphic novels and Manga) over last December. I hope your holiday season was filled with happiness and joy and that you got to spend some quality time with friends and loved ones.

As usual I would love to hear your thoughts on our December 2016 Top 25 graphic novels. Stay tuned for my sales analysis for the year coming soon.
