Silver Age Dell Comics In San Diego
Looking for Silver Age Dell Comics in San Diego? Then you are in the right place! We have a really great selection of cool Dell titles to choose from.
Dell is one of my favorite Silver Age publishers. They published many licensed comics from Walt Disney, Warner Brothers, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Walter Lantz Studio, as well as a plethora of comics from TV and movie properties such as Lone Ranger, Tarzan, Felix the Cat, Howdy Doody, Yogi Bear and other Hanna-Barbera characters.
Dell Comics was the comic book publishing arm of Dell Publishing, which got its start in pulp magazines. It published comics from 1929 to 1974. At its peak, it was the most prominent and successful American company in the medium. In 1953 Dell claimed to be the world’s largest comics publisher, selling 26 million copies each month.
Comic book historian Mark Carlson has stated at its peak in the mid-50s “while Dell’s total number of comic book titles [was] only 15% of those published, it control[ed] nearly a third of the total market. Dell [had] more million-plus sellers than any other company before or since”.
Dell was, and still is to this day, the undisputed King of the Photo Cover Comic! Dell’s famous Four Color Comics line ran for 1354 issues from September 1939 to June 1962 with many photo covers. Dell invented pop culture as far as I am concerned. Marvel and DC have nothing on Dell. And Dell did this all without variant covers, crossovers or other stupid sales gimmicks and they sold a whole hell of a lot more comics than DC and Marvel do today.
